In all likelihood he did not 2 CONC accompany his son Arthur down the Shenandoah Valley to Virginia, but died 2 CONC in Pennsylvania, as he was 55 at the time the move was made into 2 CONC Cumberland County. He married Mary Kyle, daughter of James 2 CONC Kyle(1665-1740), the exact date and place are unknown. 2 CONT 2 CONT He built his new home on the frontier on Little Chicques creek, a short 2 CONC distance below the point where the Mount Joy and Marietta turnpike 2 CONC crosses the Donegal run. He was also a pious man and a staunch member of 2 CONC the Presbyterian Church. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1728 Chester County was growing rapidly both by the influx of a new 2 CONC wave of immigration and by design of the proprietors who wished to sell 2 CONC their holdings on the frontier, to the settlers of the Eastern Shore. 2 CONC Consequently the inhabitants of the upper part of Chester County, felt 2 CONC the need of a seat of justice nearer to the place they lived. Accordingly 2 CONC a petition was presented to the Hon. Patrick Gordon, Governor of 2 CONC Pennsylvania on 6 February at a council held at Philadelphia setting 2 CONC forth that by reason of their great distance from the county town*," 2 CONC where courts are held, offices are kept and annual elections are made, 2 CONC they lie under very great inconveniences, being obliged to travel near 2 CONC one hundred miles to obtain a writ; that for want of a sufficient number 2 CONC of justices, constables and other officers, in those parts, no care is 2 CONC taken of high-ways; townships are not laid out, nor bridges built, when 2 CONC there is an apparent necessity for them; and further, that for want of 2 CONC gaol there, several vagabonds and other dissolute people harbor among 2 CONC them, thinking themselves safe from justice in so remote a place; and 2 CONC therefore praying that a division line be made between the upper and 2 CONC lower part of said county, with all the immunities, rights and privileges 2 CONC which any other county of this province does enjoy." This petition was 2 CONC signed by, Andrew Galbraith, John Galbraith, John Galbraith Jr., James 2 CONC Galbraith, James Galbraith Jr. and Robt. Galbraith. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Governor and the Council looked favorably upon this petition and the 2 CONC Council declared on 2 May 1729 "that the upper parts of the province 2 CONC described as aforesaid, are hereby declared to be erected, and are 2 CONC accordingly erected into a county by the name of Lancaster. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 8 May 1729 the Governor recommended to the board that they consider 2 CONT proper persons to be appointed officers of the newly erected county. The 2 CONC board responded by naming the following justices of the peace viz: John 2 CONC Wright, Tobias Hendricks, Samuel Blunston, Andrew Cornish, Thomas 2 CONC Edwards, Caleb 2 CONT Pierce, Thomas Reid and Samuel Jones. Robert Barber was appointed sheriff 2 CONT and Andrew Galbraith, coroner. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the 5th of August 1729 Andrew and his brother John were members of the 2 CONC Grand Inquest (todays Grand Jury), that returned an indictment against 2 CONC one Morris Cannady for having "feloniously taken and carried away 2 CONC fourteen pounds, seven shillings the goods and chattels of Daniel 2 CONC Cookson." He was tried the same day and found guilty. His punishment 2 CONC consisted of being "publickly whipped on his bare back with twenty-one 2 CONC stripes well laid on", in addition he was required to pay to the Governor 2 CONC for the support of the Government the costs of his prosecution, and two 2 CONC pounds eighteen shilling to Daniel Cookson for his loss of time and 2 CONC inconvenience in prosecuting Morris Canaday. Since Morris Canaday had no 2 CONC estate or effects to pay the costs and fine levied against him the court 2 CONC ordered the sheriff "to sell the said Morris to the highest bidder for a 2 CONC term not exceeding six years." 2 CONT 2 CONT On 4 November 1729, the court appointed and ordered that Andrew Galbraith 2 CONC with Tobias Hendricks is ordered to view the prison and make report to 2 CONC the county. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 3 November 1730 at a court held at Lancaster, Robert Barber the late 2 CONC sheriff reported that he had sold Morris Cannaday as ordered by the Court 2 CONC to one John Lawrence of Peshtank Township, for sixteen pounds. However 2 CONC John Lawrence had become insolvent and he had received only fourteen 2 CONC pounds five shillings, he therefore "prays this court would order the 2 CONC costs of suit and other charges... be settled and the sheriff may be no 2 CONC further liable." The court ordered per curia that Tobias Hendricks and 2 CONC Andrew Galbraith, Esqrs., certify their proceedings to the Governor in 2 CONC behalf of the sheriff according to his prayer. At this same meeting of 2 CONC the court the records show that John Galbraith, Andrew's brother is the 2 CONC current sheriff of Lancaster County. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the history of Lancaster County the year 1732 is a remarkable year on 2 CONC account of a political contest in which Mrs. Galbraith played a manly 2 CONC part. Andrew Galbraith of Donegal and John Wright of Hempfield were both 2 CONC candidates for member of Assembly. In 1731 Andrew did not have 2 CONC opposition, but in 1732 when George Stewart and Andrew Galbraith were 2 CONC both candidates, the Quakers decided that the election of both would mean 2 CONC that one of their ablest and most distinguished members, Judge John 2 CONC Wright would be defeated. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew resting secure in the thought that his incumbency made his seat 2 CONC safe as rather lax in promoting his candidacy, as he was being pushed 2 CONC forward by his friends. Not so his wife; and when election day arrived 2 CONC she mounted her favorite mare, Nelly and with a spur on her ankle away 2 CONC she went, her red cloak flowing to the wind, to scour the country side 2 CONC for Andrew. 2 CONT 2 CONT At that time it was necessary to go to the county seat to vote, and Mrs. 2 CONC Galbraith appeared at the head of a long line of Andrew's Scotch-Irish 2 CONC friends and neighbors at the polling place. She addressed them from the 2 CONC saddle with such fire and eloquence that Andrew carried the day. She did 2 CONC him good service for Andrew was returned to the Assembly, and from that 2 CONC day forward, he was unopposed in future elections. The other successful 2 CONC candidates were George Stewart, Thomas Edwards, and Samuel Blunston. John 2 CONC Wright was not happy with the returns of the election and he contested 2 CONC the results, but to no avail. The House resolved "that Andrew Galbraith 2 CONC is duly returned as a member for the County of Lancaster." 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew was a member of the Assembly continuously from 1731 thru 1738. 2 CONC This indicates that he not only did a good job in the eyes of his fellow 2 CONC citizens, but that he was well thought of and well liked. 2 CONT 2 CONT Just why Andrew is not a member of the Assembly after 1738 is not known, 2 CONC however it is possible that he did not want to engage in politics after 2 CONC 1738 as the political scene in Lancaster County became increasingly 2 CONC turbulent after that date. 2 CONT 2 CONT The struggle for office between the English and the Irish was nothing 2 CONC new, but by 1743 the elections were turning violent. In that year, an 2 CONC election was held, to fill the seat of Thomas Linsey who had died in 2 CONC office. The Irish compelled the sheriff to receive only the tickets that 2 CONC they approved and make a return to the Assembly accordingly. Naturally 2 CONC these antics were reported and the following resolution passed the 2 CONC Assembly "Resolved, That the sheriff having assumed upon himself the 2 CONC power of being sole judge at the late election, exclusive of the 2 CONC inspectors chosen by the framers of said county of Lancaster, is illegal, 2 CONC unwarranted and an infringement of the liberties of the people of the 2 CONC province; that it is just cause for the discontent to the inhabitants of 2 CONC said county; that if any disturbances followed thereon, it is justly 2 CONC imputed to his own misconduct. Resolved, further, That the sheriff of 2 CONC Lancaster County be admonished by the speaker." 2 CONT 2 CONT The sheriff was present and after being admonished he promised that he 2 CONC would take care and keep the law in the future. He also altered the 2 CONC return and Samuel Blunston was allowed to take his seat. 2 CONT 2 CONT In addition to the English and Irish, the German population of Lancaster 2 CONC County was beginning to make it's presence felt. As early as 1727 at 2 CONC least one thousand German families arrived in Pennsylvania, and in that 2 CONC year a complaint was made to the governor "that a large number of 2 CONC Germans, peculiar in their dress, religion and notions of political 2 CONC Governments had arrived...and were determined not to obey the lawful 2 CONC authority of Government...but they had resolved to speak their own 2 CONC language." 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1743 the Germans were numerous enough to feel they could successfully 2 CONC defend their rights as well as the English and Irish looked after theirs, 2 CONC so they determined to maintain these rights with all the firmness 2 CONC required to do so. As a result the disturbances between the Irish and 2 CONC Germans were common and were growing increasingly frequent. This 2 CONC situation was unsettling, not only to the inhabitants of Lancaster 2 CONC County, but to the proprietors as well. In order to prevent more trouble, 2 CONC the proprietors, after the organization of York and Cumberland Counties, 2 CONC gave their agents orders to sell no more land to the Irish in York and 2 CONC Lancaster Counties. 2 CONT 2 CONT They were also instructed to make overtures to the present Irish settlers 2 CONC in Paxton, Swatara, and Donegal townships to move into the new County of 2 CONC Cumberland. Apparently the offer was a liberal one as Andrew sold his 2 CONC farm in 2 CONT 1747, to his brother-in-law John Kyle,* and moved to Cumberland County, 2 CONC West of the Susquehanna river. During this same period many other Donegal 2 CONC neighbors of Andrew also accepted this inducement to move. Among these 2 CONC were the Works, Moores, Whitehills, Silvers, Semples, Sterrits, and Woods 2 CONC who were neighbors of Andrew, when Donegal Township was established in 2 CONC 1722. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew was not only a practical and successful politician, he was an 2 CONC honest and just man, who founded the first Presbyterian Church in Donegal 2 CONC Township in1720. As a matter of fact it was probably the first 2 CONC Presbyterian Church west of Philadelphia, although there were some 2 CONC itinerant preachers in the community from time to time, this is the first 2 CONC permanent site of regular services. In August of 1721 Andrew rode to New 2 CONC Castle on the Delaware, and asked for a minister to supply (temporary 2 CONC minister) the congregation. They were so much impressed by the zeal 2 CONC manifested by Mr. Galbraith on behalf of his friends and neighbors that 2 CONC they sent a Rev. George Gillespie and Rev. Robert Cross. However it was 2 CONC five more years before a regular minister was obtained. 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew was the first ruling elder, selected the site for the first 2 CONC building, and without doubt held services on many occasions, as the first 2 CONC Pastor was a Reverend James Anderson, who received a call from the 2 CONC Donegal Church in 1726. In 1730 the original log structure was replaced 2 CONC by a building of rough stone laid in mortar. The influence of the Donegal 2 CONC Church was felt far beyond the confines of Lancaster County and became 2 CONC the nursery of Presbyterianism in a large part of Pennsylvania, Virginia, 2 CONC North Carolina and Tennessee. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 AUG 2002 3 TIME 11:07:50 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME James /Galbraith/ 2 NSFX #2 [Or10] 1 TITL #2 [Or10] 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1703 2 PLAC Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 11 JUN 1786 2 PLAC East Pennsborough Twp.,Cumberland Co. Ross 2 CONC said that Andrew and two of his brothers were in the Revolutionary War 2 CONC and Andrew died on the way home from the war. Ross also claimed that 2 CONC Nancy Ann and her children returned to South Carolina and joined her 2 CONC husband's brothers in moving to Kentucky. 2 CONT 2 CONT All of Andrew's children used the last name of Gilbreath and his Widow 2 CONC seemed to have used the name Gilbrearth after his death. At that time Cumberland County was 2 CONC the limit of Westward expansion, and as a result of the rough and tumble 2 CONC life of the Pennsylvania frontier, records are few and far between. 2 CONC Really, documentation on the life of Arthur begins with his marriage to 2 CONC Mary Sharp on 15 January 1768 in the St. James Episcopal Church in the 2 CONC town of Lancaster. Arthur was 40 years old when he married Mary Sharp. 2 CONT Evidently, Arthur remained behind when his father Andrew went west [wpg] 2 CONT Arthur Galbraith on 22 September 1766, took up 250 Acres of land on 2 CONC Shaver's 2 CONT Creek, (according to Mr. M. Luther Heisey, of the Lancaster County 2 CONC HistoricalSociety this is near Petersburg, in what is now Huntingdon 2 CONC County, PA).Huntingdon County, was created in 1787 from Bedford County, 2 CONC which in turnwas erected in 1771 from Cumberland. 2 CONT 2 CONT Since we know that Arthur's father Andrew, moved in 1747, to 2 CONC CumberlandCounty, (when Arthur was 19) and since Arthur took up the 2 CONC acreage at Shaver'sCreek, in 1766 when he was 38 years old this would 2 CONC place Arthur in CumberlandCounty, for 19 years before he became a land 2 CONC owner. We do not have a record of the sale of Arthur's holdings on 2 CONC Shaver's Creek, but we do know that Arthur and his new bride departed 2 CONC Pennsylvania shortly after their marriage. Why did Arthur leave? Was it 2 CONC because he wanted to start a new life in new surroundings? Well no 2 CONC matter, the fact is he did leave and started down the Shenandoah valley 2 CONC to finally come to rest in Hawkins County, Tennessee. 2 CONT Now, through the courtesy of Lewis Preston Summers, lets follow Arthur as 2 CONC hemade his odyssey down the Valley on the Kings Hiway (now US 11) to his 2 CONC newhome, as shown by the Annals of Botetourt, Fincastle & Washington 2 CONC Counties, Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT BOTETOURT COUNTY, VIRGINIA WAS ORGANIZED ON 13 FEBRUARY 1770. 2 CONT 2 CONT 13 March 1771: Botetourt County Court: It is interesting to note that the 2 CONC first official documentation of Arthur in his new home, concerns a breach 2 CONC of the peace on the part of Arthur, against his neighbor Arthur Campbell. 2 CONC Arthur Campbell was an adversary of no mean stature, of the same Scotch 2 CONC blood as Arthur Galbraith, and a lawsuit is much better than starting a 2 CONC Scotch Clan feud. Testifying to that is the fact that both of these men 2 CONC had traveled 105 miles, in the cold, stark weather of March to be present 2 CONC to settle the matter. The full minutes of the County Court, set out in 2 CONC the austere language imported directly from the British Isles, is given 2 CONC below, as being worthy for our modern day appetites. "Upon the complaint 2 CONC of Arthur Campbell agst. Arthur Calbraith for a breach of the peace, the 2 CONC parties being heard it is ord. that the sd. Arthur Calbraith give 2 CONC security for his good behaviour for a year & day next ensuing." 2 CONT Arthur must have known that he was going to lose as he brought his 2 CONC bondsmen with him as we see in the verdict next listed: "Arthur 2 CONC Calbraith, James Dewis & Peter Willey came into court & acknd. themselves 2 CONC severally indebted to our Sovereign Lord George the third, now King of 2 CONC Great Britain & in the sums following, viz.: The said Arthur Calbraith in 2 CONC the sum of one hundred pounds and the said James Dewis & Peter Willey in 2 CONC the sum of fifty pounds each of their respective goods and chattels, lands 2 CONC and tenements, to be levied, and to our said Lord the King, his heirs & 2 CONC successors rendered. The crime of stopping the 2 CONC Kings Highway, could mean any one of several things, but most likely it 2 CONC had to do with erecting a barrier of some sort to fence in cattle. This 2 CONC offense was seemingly minor as occurrences in the early days of Botetourt 2 CONC County were frequent. [Summers p 141] 2 CONT 2 CONT 13 November 1771 Arthur must have been considered a reliable citizen for 2 CONC the day after his indictment for stopping the Kings Hiway he was selected 2 CONC to serve on a Jury in the case of William Simpson agst William Herbert. Now, he moves, into Hawkins County, Tennessee. 2 CONT 2 CONT Although scanty, early records of the New Providence Presbyterian Church 2 CONC Congregation indicate that it was organized in the home of William 2 CONC Armstrong Jr. in Carter's Valley. William Armstrong came to Carter's 2 CONC Valley from the New Providence Congregation of Virginia in 1776. Minutes 2 CONC of Holston Presbytery in the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian 2 CONC Church at Montreat, NC show New Providence on the roll of churches as of 2 CONC 1780. It is one of the oldest Presbyterian Churches in Tennessee. At the 2 CONC time of it's organization it was in Sullivan County, NC. Since then it 2 CONC has been in Spencer County, State of Franklin, The Territory South of the 2 CONC River Ohio, Hawkins County, NC and Hawkins County, TN, when it became a 2 CONC State in 1796. No roll of charter members has been preserved but a 2 CONC partial list of members compiled more than 100 years ago show Arthur 2 CONC Galbraith and his wife Mary Sharp arriving prior to 1800. According to a 2 CONC letter written by William Galbraith, grandson of Arthur, the date of 2 CONC arrival in Hawkins County was 1779. This was the last move on the part of 2 CONC Arthur, as he lived the rest of his life in Hawkins County, dying shortly 2 CONC after 23 February 1818 (date of his will) and his wife Mary preceding him 2 CONC by about 10 days, possibly on 11 February 1818. 2 CONT [andrewG.GED] 2 CONT Downloaded from Jim Kyle's database at the Rootsweb WorldConnect project. 2 CONT Material transcribed by wpg: 2 CONT Arthur Galbreath Mar. 18, 1780 70 Carters Valley: son to Andrew G. and 2 CONC Mary Kyle 67-481 2 CONT Arthur Galbreath Oct. 17, 1779 271 Carters Valley, N side of Holston 2 CONC (became Hawkins Co) 71-272 1 SOUR @S1@ 2 DATA 3 TEXT Date of Import: Jun 23, 2000 1 CHAN 2 DATE 4 AUG 2002 3 TIME 15:44:48 0 @I24@ INDI 1 NAME Robert /Galbraith/ 2 NSFX UC [Or10, Gi33] 1 TITL UC [Or10, Gi33] 1 SEX M 1 DEAT 2 DATE Bef 1768 1 FAMS @F14@ 1 FAMC @F4@ 1 NOTE According to Stephanie Satter, Robert died before 1768, leaving a 2 CONC daughter Anne, age 16 at time of his death. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 2 FEB 2003 3 TIME 10:56:52 0 @I25@ INDI 1 NAME Dorcas /Smith/ 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE Aft 1770 2 PLAC Carlisle,Cumberland,PA 1 FAMS @F12@ 1 FAMC @F317@ 1 NOTE Likely sister to James and Samuel Smith (see Engle 4-II p 192 1 CHAN 2 DATE 9 JUN 2002 3 TIME 09:01:10 0 @I26@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Martin /Sharpe/ 2 NSFX [H44] 1 TITL [H44] 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 SEP 1747 2 PLAC Lancaster Co.,PA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 FEB 1818 2 PLAC Hawkins Co. Although clearly written many of the 2 CONC letters were poorly formed. The "T" of Tate and 'Takin' were clearly 2 CONC made as an "E" and only from the context and finding references to Rev. 2 CONC Tate, I knew them to be a "T". The "a' in 'Chattles' and some other 2 CONC words looked to be a 'u' or an 'n'. Thus I was confronted in five places 2 CONC with a three letter name beginning with 'J' followed with either 'a' or 2 CONC 'n' and ending with a vertical squiggle. Is it 'Jas' or 'Jno'? I would 2 CONC say that the Anderson first name is James, 'Jas' as the second letter is 2 CONC partly closed and I was able to identify a likely James Anderson in other 2 CONC records. Then, since the remaining four cases were all similar to each 2 CONC other they might well be Jno, John. 2 CONT 2 CONT As it appeared this document was, as the first, for a John Galbreath and 2 CONC filed by Mrs. Booth alongside the first estate document and the reported 2 CONC death dates were only days apart I suspected that the two individuals 2 CONC were the same. However, I worried about two points. The first John was 2 CONC "Late of Midleton" and the other "Late of Dunigale". I even excused 2 CONC this, thinking that the poor spelling of Donegal was due to limited 2 CONC knowledge of a Clerk in Cumberland and the "Late" meant John had recently 2 CONC moved from there. However, there was no way to rectify the fact with the 2 CONC second document the inventory had been conducted by Jxx (likely John) 2 CONC Byers who was acting as Administrator. This is a Court appointed 2 CONC individual, usually of the family, who acts when there is no will with an 2 CONC acceptable executor. We know that the first John had made a will that 2 CONC was probated and thus there were two John Galbreaths, dying at the nearly 2 CONC the same time. 2 CONT 2 CONT Turning then to the Internet, especially Google search, I first tried to 2 CONC identify the other parties coupling them with Donegal and sometimes 2 CONC Galbraith or Galbreath. The Rev. Joseph Tate (pre 1728-1774) is 2 CONC prominent among early American Presbyterians and in his early years, 2 CONC beginning in late 1748 was the pastor at Donegal. He was ordained and 2 CONC married Margaret Boyd, both events on 23 November 1748. James Anderson 2 CONC (son of James from Scotland, the predecessor to Rev. Tate) was born May 2 CONC 14, 1721 in New York City, New York; died June 1, 1790 in Donegal in 2 CONC Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Anderson married (1) Ruth Bayley and (2) 2 CONC Margaret Tate. Margaret Tate was the widow of Rev. Tate. Brothers John 2 CONC and James Bayly both lived in Donegal. The Galbraiths had several 2 CONC connections with that family. Margaret, daughter to John Galbraith (born 2 CONC 1690) married John Bayley. Ann, daughter to Bertram (son of James 2 CONC Galbraith) married Thomas, the son of James Bayly of Donegal. When I 2 CONC searched John Byers/Donegal/GalbraithORGalbreath I got several hits, one 2 CONC on own material, and the identity of this John Galbreath was immediately 2 CONC apparent. 2 CONT 2 CONT Robert Galbraith at age three had come to America with his father John 2 CONC and grandfather James in 1718. Robert married Rebecca Work and they had 2 CONC a John (1739) and a Rebecca (1742) . Robert died in 1746, directing 2 CONC mother Rebecca as guardian, with the proviso for grandfather John 2 CONC Galbraith to assume responsibility after four years. Grandfather John 2 CONC died in Donegal in 1753 leaving bequests to daughter (in-law) Rebecca, 2 CONC and grandchildren John and Rebecca. Widow Rebecca subsequently married 2 CONC Captain John Byers of Donegal. Orbison strays at this point and builds a 2 CONC considerable biography for our John Galbreath ending with his death in 2 CONC 1824. Jean Harriger proved that this was a different John and said "no 2 CONC records have been found to show just what did happen to this John 2 CONC Galbraith, son of Robert and Rebecca Work". 2 CONT 2 CONT However, Lela Booth had found the record. Thus we have that John 2 CONC Galbreath (1736-1757) was related to three people in the inventory 2 CONC document: John Byers, his step-father, John Bayly, his uncle (spouse to 2 CONC Margaret) and his grandfather John Galbreath who raised him for several 2 CONC years and left him property rights. 2 CONT 2 CONT ENDNOTES: Deciphering the script is a normal problem with early 2 CONC documents because of poor handwriting, lack of punctuation, archaic or 2 CONC misspelling and document damage. With this document the script is 2 CONC beautiful and the paper was in good shape, however, the numeral '8' is 2 CONC very oddly made and the cover year seems to be 17507, as the '8' is 2 CONC rather like as a Greek Theta on its side. Note that alternative 2 CONC spellings were used for 'Chattels' and 'Middleton' Township. I have 2 CONC attempted to correctly quote the material as written in the documents, 2 CONC without resorting to sic. 2 CONT It is obviously important that the researcher provide the location of 2 CONC the document. 2 CONT Material from the Orbison manuscript with amendments and corrections by 2 CONC Jean Harriger. Typed by Barbara Patterson in the Collection of Galbraith 2 CONC Families of Donegal, Lancaster County. 2 CONT I have made his birth year earlier since there was no mention of John 2 CONC as a minor in the Estate Inventory and this birth would make him 14, a 2 CONC transition age for minor rights, when his grandfather took charge in 2 CONC 1750. I would disregard Egle's conjecture that this John Galbreath 2 CONC married Mary McCormick. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 20 MAY 2003 3 TIME 09:01:23 0 @I129@ INDI 1 NAME Rebecca /Galbraith/ 2 NSFX [Or33, Gi9] 1 TITL [Or33, Gi9] 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 Nov 1745? 2 PLAC Donegal Twp,Lancaster Co. The elder Blaine, 2 CONC born of Scotch ancestry came with his family from the North of Ireland, 2 CONC in the vicinity of Londonderry, to America prior to 1745, and settled in 2 CONC Toboyne township, Cumberland county. He took up a large tract of land on 2 CONC the south side of the Juniata river, as did each of his children a few 2 CONC years later. He became an influential man on the then frontiers of the 2 CONC Province, and was quite prominent in affairs during the French and Indian 2 CONC wars, as well as toward the close of his life in the struggle for 2 CONC independence. He died at his residence in Toboyne township in July 1792, 2 CONC well advanced in years, leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and nine children. The 2 CONC eldest of these was Ephraim, who received a classical education at the 2 CONC school of Rev. Dr. Alison, in Chester county, Pa., and was recommended by 2 CONC him for an ensigncy in the Provincial service as being "a gentleman of 2 CONC good family." He was appointed commissary sergeant, and during the 2 CONC Bouquet expedition to the westward, in 1763, was connected with the 2d 2 CONC Provincial Regiment. From 1771 to 1773 he served as sheriff of Cumberland 2 CONC county. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary struggle he entered early 2 CONC into the contest and assisted in raising a battalion of Associators, of 2 CONC which he was commissioned lieutenant colonel, holding the position until 2 CONC he was appointed by the Supreme Executive Council as county lieutenant of 2 CONC Cumberland, April 5, 1777. This office he resigned in August following, 2 CONC when he entered the commissary department of the Continental 2 CONC establishment. He was commissioned commissary general of purchases Feb. 2 CONC 19, 1778, a position he held over three years, including one of the most 2 CONC trying periods of the war-the cantonment at Valley Forge. He was a man of 2 CONC large fortune and recourse, so that, during the long and severe winter, 2 CONC with the aid of personal friends, he made an advance of $6,000,000, for 2 CONC use of the patriot army. Millions of dollars passed through his hands 2 CONC without suspicion of his personal sacrifices, however, Colonel Blaine's 2 CONC estate became impaired, although his fortune remained ample. While in the 2 CONC service he enjoyed the confidence of Washington and his fellow officers. 2 CONC It was at his home that the first president remained during his week's 2 CONC stay at Carlisle during the so-called Whiskey Insurrection of 1794. 2 CONC Subsequently Colonel Blaine retired to his farm in Middleton township, 2 CONC Cumberland Co., Pa., where he closed his eminently patriotic and 2 CONC honorable career in his sixty-third year. He was twice married-his second 2 CONC wife being Sarah E. Duncan, widow of John Duncan, of Carlisle, and 2 CONC daughter of Col. Samuel Postlethwaite, and they had one son, Ephraim, 2 CONC d.s.p. By his first wife, Rebecca Galbraith, there was issue, six 2 CONC children, of whom we have only the following (surname Blaine): James 2 CONC (grandfather of James G. Blaine), died 1832, married first Jean ________, 2 CONC and secondly Margaret Lyon; Robert, died January, 1826, married Anna 2 CONC Susanna Metzgar, and they had issue (surname Blaine), Rebecca, married 2 CONC Rev. She was a resident of Carlisle, near which town 2 CONC was his estate of "Middlesex". Judge Duncan was killed, September 20, 2 CONC 1797, in a duel with a lawyer named Lamberton, and one of the judge's 2 CONC seconds was James Blaine, son of Colonel Ephraim Blaine by his first 2 CONC wife.
