Lancaster Wills
STEWART, REBECCA Donegal Twp.
December 28, 1748 --- 1749
Children: Charles, Robert, William and Frances.[Margaret]
Ex.: John Galbreath and James Karr.
Also have info that there was another (oldest) child Alexander who inherited lands in Scotland and Rebecca had lived there until her Husband died.
On my trip to Lancaster (Oct 2002) I read her will of 28 Dec 1748
Executors were: Brother John Galbreath [recall that she and John were children of the first James who came in 1718] and my son JAMES KARR
Children: Charles, Robert, and William Stuart, Frances Stuart, Margret
witnesses Janet (x) Galbreth (would have been her sister-in-law) and Elizabeth Kerr.
1) I can only guess that James Karr must have been son-in-law (perhaps spouse to Margret). Also James Karr was the accountant for the estate of Jannet, widow of John (he died in 1753). I have a feeling that this Janet was thus a Karr/Kerr. Was he spouse of Elizabeth Kerr?
2) I read some time ago the story of Rebecca (but can't find it now) and as I recall: She married Alexander in Scotland (!) in about 1717 and did not come to America with father James and family.
At any rate, Rebecca and family were in Scotland when Alexander died in 1743; their oldest son Alexander jr, got the family lands and Rebecca and the other children came to America in 1745, and she died in 1748 (per above).
There seems to be v. little consistancy in writing wills in the 1700s. I have seen many that neglected to mention daughters unless they were minors. I would have thought for Rebecca's minors there would have been some instructions. Perhaps there are orphan court proceedings. At any rate if James Karr is the son or son-in-law he was born by 1726 (and ditto for witness Elizabeth Kerr) I suspect Rebecca would not have born after 1708. I would still put it around 1702, so she could have married Alexander before 1718 and her family's departure.
I have seen many wills where the reference to son was actually son-in-law; this was very common. So it is most likely to me that James Karr was the son-in-law. We really need someone to go to the Lancaster Historical Society and have a good look (as said, I could only spend 30 minutes there). I suspect I ran across the will of Rebekah Galbraith Steuart (SIC) as it was in the Galbraith folder and goes on to read "brother John Galbreath and my son James Karr executors Charles Robert and William Stuart Frances Stuart Margret. Janet X Galbreth Elizabeth Kerr [hard to read last name]" I do not know why Margret had no last name and why different spellings of surnames were used. I don't know how much more was in the will that I failed to copy (sorry)
It was the only thing that I copied as it surprized me. (see the other estate records that were in the folder--I got that list over the telephone before going, and added the relations).
The researcher needs to read the Steuart/Stewart folder as well as the Karr/Kerr--I bet something can be found.
The Archives of the Lancaster County Historical Society consists of county records, Manuscript Groups, deeds, bound newspapers, and the Document Collection. The county records include civil and criminal court dockets and documents, estate inventories, administrators accounts, prison records, grantor/grantee indexes, tax lists, Orphans Court papers, marriage papers, tavern licenses and petitions, road dockets and petitions, and Commissioners' Orders for Payment. Items must be retrieved by the staff. Because of the condition of some materials, the staff will photocopy documents for patrons to use. However, some items may be too fragile to handle
*Estate Inventories: Inventories of estates showing name of decedent, date, itemized list of goods and chattels, appraised valuation, and signatures and affidavits of appraisers. 1729-1913. Galbraith folder contains John 1753 [father to Robert, wife was Janet --], John 63 [?] and John 69 [son to Andrew, wife was Dorcas]; Robert 1738 [of Paxtang, unk wife] and Robert 1746 [1747?, son to John, spouse was Rebecca Work] the wills etc have been copied and are in the Family files, same for records of Robert [in testate] of 1757 {unknown?] but Elizabeth of 1757 [prob. d. to John and Janet, unmarried) they have not been. (d. in testate)
