[161] James Galbreath of Straban Twp died in 1772 with wife (not named) and children Isabella (10 shillings, delayed by 1 year). Robert (executor), William, James (sons got 2/3), Jane (1/3), and Nancy (1/3! and a 2 year delay) in his will (C-116). James served as Straban Supervisor in the year of his death*. It is accepted that John referred to this James in his 1769 will and that John and James are brothers. 'Friend' referred to a relative or kinsman, normally a first cousin rather than brother, but to me nephew makes the most sense (next issue). It appears that James does have a brother John, but a John of Philadelphia, as well as a brother Robert in Straban

THE PHILADELPHIA CONNECTIONS
N: page 504 but Will #260.
John Galbreath. City of Phila. Merchant. 18 March 1766. 12 April 1766. Wife: Jean (D900). Brothers: James and Robert Galbreath. Sisters: Lettice, Sarah, Nancy and Elisabeth and to the children of my sister Margaret decd [the abstracts incorrectly show her a daughter, is she wife of McCay, Margaret is the only sister we know who is dead, and McCay had no widow in April of 1759 when his will was made, see under Margaret], decd. Niece: Hannah Lord (would not have been d. of Margaret, but Sarah?., also not niece to Jean who we think is McCollouck) All the residue and sum of D900 and to "sell that plantation in the County of Chester and the plantation near the City of Philadelphia Execs.: Jean Galbreath, Mr. Hugh McCulley, merchant in the City, Rev. Dr. Francis Allison.
Witn: John Jackson, Hannah Allison, William McCay [John's nephew, son to Wm McCay Sr.]
Rev. Allison owned and ran the New London School in New London Township, Chester County. The school was begun in 1741 by Allison, formerly of Ireland, and graduate of the University of Glasgow. The foster son and nephew Galbreath McCay (possilbe son to sister Margaret), is not mentioned, but perhaps included in children of sister Margaret
I believe he is refers to brothers James and Robert, both of Straban. Not impossible that John of Philadelphia was also the John in Straban, up to 1765, and the transaction was between bothers.
There are a number of references to John Galbreath-and there are at least two in the Philadelphia area of the time. One is John, merchant of Philadelphia who also had a plantation in Springfield Twp of Chester. Another lived in Springfield of the adjoining twp of Providence-the latter was a Quaker. There is a further reference to John Galbreath, administrator to a will in East Nottingham in 1767-a Quaker area still further west.
Lastly: We all recall the following marriage: 7, 4, 1742, Galbreath, John, and Jane McCollock at the First Presb. Church of Phil. Why would this not be John Galbreath of Philadelphia rather than John Galbraith, son of Robert of Paxtang. I find no confirmation that the Jennet he married was a McCollock (or a Jane) or that he was married in Philadelphia.
Note these names appearing in the wills: of Hugh McCulley Mary McColough and James McCollough. (The latter is also witness to the Henry Maddock will of 1765-John Galbreath had acquired the Maddock mortgage in 1760.)
